This
famous sports facility was named for Earl F. Quigley, a coach for
the Tigers from 1914 to 1935. Quigley Stadium was
completed in 1936 and it was the largest stadium in the state
and one of the largest in the South. At one time it was
the home field of the Little Rock Travelers baseball team.
Many college and university football teams, including the
Arkansas Razorbacks, have played in this stadium. Under coach Wilson Matthews' leadership the Tigers
won 10 State Championships and one National Championship in
eleven years. No one has ever left such a huge footprint
on this field like Coach Matthews. The field has been
named the "Bernie Cox
Field" after their
current
outstanding coach at Little Rock Central High School. Central High football
letterman from 1947 to 1957 started
Wilson's Tigers
in 1985 to honor Coach Matthews and recall the history made
during those years. |
