Coach Wilson Matthews and his staff took over the Tiger football team in 1947.  Coach Matthews has a record of 109 wins, 17 loses and 3 ties.  During his Tiger coaching career, coach Matthews won 10 State Championships and 1 National Championship.

Coach Matthews was the head football coach during the 1957 integration crisis at Central High School. He was able to keep his athlete's focused on football rather than what was happening on the school's lawn and in the halls. He practiced the Tigers around the tents, trucks and men of the 101st Airborne, which set up camp on his practice field. Despite the the life changing events and attention spotlighted on the school, Coach Matthews was able to lead the Tigers to an undefeated season along with the State and National Championship.

Coach Matthews was succeeded by Gene Hall.
